Choosing a Sailboat for Beginners

Choosing a Sailboat for Beginners

You've decided you want to learn how to sail. Now you just need to choose a boat to learn how to sail in. There are a lot of choices, and several things you need to consider. There are several different kinds of sailboats to choose from. There are wet and dry beginner sailboats. There are also more advanced kinds such as catamaran sailboats, and there are cabin sailboats as well.

On Wet Beginner Sailboats, you can expect to get wet most of the time. You sit on the deck or on the floor. These boats are easier to manage so they are good for beginners. On Dry Beginner Sailboats, you will stay dry most of the time (in good weather). You sit on a seat or on the gunwhale. These boats make you feel relatively safe so they are good for beginners too. On Cabin Sailboats, you definitely stay dry. They can have a small cuddy for storage or a full size cabin for staying overnight in.

It is best for beginners to have a small simple boat. They require a lot less responsibility than bigger boats, and can be just as much fun. It is easier to learn the basics when there are fewer lines and sails. Small boats also have the advantage of being more responsive in light winds. Once you have learned the basics on small boats, you can apply the skills you've acquired to any size of boat.

You will want to begin on a boat that is rigged with one mast and one sail, since that will make it easier to focus on learning the fundamentals of sailing. A number of small boats are designed to perform well with just one sail.

You will also want a conventional single-hulled boat. Multihulled boats, such as catamarans and trimarans can be a bit too much for learners as they are more high performance boats. You will want to get a boat with a fiberglass hull. A fiberglass hull requires less maintenance than a wooden hull, and it is lightweight and fairly easy to repair.

You will want to buy a boat that is at least 12' for two adults, or at least 10' for two children. Make sure your boat is big enough for two people.

You will want a boat with a centerboard or daggerboard keel. Centerboard or daggerboard designed boats allow you to sail in shallow water. When you are sailing with the wind behind you, these keels can be pulled up for better performance. Leeboard keels will do the same thing, but they are more fussy because you have to change them with each tack

Sailing can be a lot of fun, when you have chosen the right boat for you. When you are beginning it is best to get a boat that is small (but big enough for two people) and simple (with one mast and one sail and a fiberglass hull) so that you can concentrate on learning the fundamentals of sailing. A small boat like this is more responsive in light winds. You will want a boat with a centerboard or daggerboard keel because they are less fussy than leeboard keels. Find the right boat and you will have many enjoyable sailing adventures. Have fun.

Women in Ham Radio

Women in Ham Radio

I am a firm believer that women can do just as much as men and my wife is living proof of that statement. Being in the military for twenty years I was required to be away from my family for months at a time and as such my wife quickly learned to do many of the usual tasks around the home that are traditionally reserved for the man of the house. In fact the personal joke for many years was to refer to her as "Ms Villa" when something needed to be repaired at home. She has even gone as far as changing out an engine on a small rally car which we once had in Spain.

Ham radio should be no different than any other task for although one usually imagines the activity of radio communications as being a male dominated game it is slowly being taken over by the YL's of America. YL is short for young ladies of which all women are addressed in ham radio regardless of their ages. It is the same as calling all the male radio operators OM or old men.

Most ham radio organizations welcome women with open arms and are more than willing to assist them in any way possible towards obtaining their technician or higher license. An interesting point that was made to me in this regards was that the normal high female voice makes it much easier to understand and read a radio transmission than it would be for the usual male voice. That characteristic is especially vital when emergency radio communications is necessary and errors can not be tolerated. During the good weather days women are taking to the airwaves and chatting to their male counterparts about local or long distance road conditions and the various community events which are taking place in their part of the nation. However when a disaster strikes and the storm clouds are on the horizon these same women are busy sending out emergency communications via airwaves.

Dawn Moss is just such a woman. When her home was threatened by rising flood waters, Dawn rushed her pets and children to a safe location and quickly made her way to her local CERT center where she transferred radio traffic for a continuous 36 hours. These messages were of an emergency nature such as direct requests for help and various rescue coordination transmissions.

Ms. Moss is not alone in her pursuit of the ham radio hobby. More and more women are learning the operations of the radios, obtaining the necessary license and joining their communities Amateur Radio Emergency Services. The number of these female members has been increasing over the years and to this day their numbers range as high as 30 percent in some areas. There are more women involved today because they need only study some basic electronics and possess a willingness to give back to their community.

I personally am planning to get my YL interested in the program as well, for I feel it would be of great benefit in a retreat to have the wife trained in radio use as well. If this sounds like something you and your wife may be interested in you could conduct an internet search of your area for ham radio clubs. They are all over the nation.

"Moderate Speed" in Thick Weather, Please

"Moderate Speed" in Thick Weather, Please

According to the international rules of the "road", all seafaring vessels are supposed to maintain "moderate speed" in thick weather, but this rule is variously interpreted and often disregarded. The international rules also prescribe various fog signals, which vessels must make by whistle, foghorn or bell, according to circumstances. In coastal waters foggy weather increases the danger of running aground as well as causing collisions. The waters are well charted, and frequent soundings help the navigator find his way, and he is further aided by fog signals on shore, in the shape of sirens, whistles, bells (including submarine bells) and nowadays, above land, by so-called radio beacons. Acoustic fog signals of all kinds (submarine excepted) are famous for the varying distances at which they can be heard. A signal audible under certain circumstances at a distance of ten miles will, on occasions, be entirely inaudible at two; or, again, there will be certain zones or regions within a mile or two of the signal where no sound can be heard, while the signal is distinctly heard at much greater distances. These eccentricities are probably not due so much to the fog itself as to eddies and other movements of the atmosphere.

According to a well-known publication of the British Meteorological Office, "seamen's weather" includes only three elements of great practical importance-wind, fog, and floating ice. The last of these pertains as much to hydrography as to meteorology, but its prevalence depends upon weather conditions and also exercises a great influence upon the weather of the world, through its effects upon barometric pressure and winds. Ice is more dangerous to steamers than to sailing vessels, on account of the greater speed of the former; and the tragic loss of the Titanic, through collision with an iceberg on Aprill 15, 1912, proved that no vessel is big enough to be safe from it. Fortunately the vigilance of the International Ice Patrol, maintained by the United States Coast Guard, has made the North Atlantic steamship routes fairly safe from the grim menace described in Longfellow's well-known lines- "Southward with fleet of ice Sailed the corsair Death"

Two other outstanding factors in marine meteorology require mention here. The navigator reads his barometer regularly, not because the pressure of the atmosphere affects his well being in any direct way, but because its fluctuations afford a clue to coming storms and shifts of wind. The state of the sea-by which is meant the smoothness or roughness of its surface-is generally classed as a weather feature, because it is mainly dependent on wind. The seaman distinguishes between waves of two kinds. Those set up by the wind blowing at the time and place of observation are called "sea," while waves due to a distant storm or to one that has recently occurred in the vicinity of the ship are called "swell."

Spokane Washington Weather - Full of Surprises

Spokane Washington Weather - Full of Surprises

Spokane Washington's weather condition is clearly affected by its location. The place is located in the Northwestern part of United States in the state of Washington, specifically on the Spokane River in the Eastern Washington. It lies between the Cascade Mountains to the west and Rocky Mountains to the east and north which protects the city from the hazards of the weather in other portions of the Pacific Northwest. Moreover, the Rocky Mountains safeguards the place from the most terrible effects of Artic winter. The Rocky Mountains also shield Spokane from the winter season's cold air masses traveling southward across Canada, sparing the city from the worst effects of Arctic air in winter.

The city experiences the four distinct seasons each year but over time and due to recent changes in global climate, drastic changes in weather patterns have occurred. Spokane's climate is mild during summer when temperature is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit and very cold during winter when temperature is around 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spokane experiences an average annual precipitation which is a little less compared to Seattle's. About half of the precipitation falls as snow which mostly happens during December, the time of the year when most precipitation occurs.

December is here and Christmas time is getting closer and closer. Have you felt the coldness of the weather? Are you wearing layers and layer of clothing to wave-off the coldness? That's how winter works. Because the earth is tilted, the rays of the sun hits the earth at a shallow angle thus the rays are more spread out than usual which makes penetration of heat difficult. Other than that, during winter time, there are longer nights but shorter days.

Winter days are mostly cloudy and foggy with below freezing temperatures making the Spokane Washington weather cold. The annual snow fall is estimated to be 46 inches a year. So far, for December 2010, the lowest temperatures are ranging from 13 degrees Fahrenheit to 33 degrees Fahrenheit and the highest temperatures are ranging from 29 degrees Fahrenheit to 40 degrees, making an average of 37 degrees F for the highest temperature and an average of 24 degrees F for the lowest temperature. To date, the recorded precipitation for December 2010 is 0.92 inches out of the expected 2.33 inches precipitation. As for the next seven days, that is December 11, 2010 to December 17, 2010, the highest temperature is expected to range from 32 degrees F to 45 degrees F and the lowest temperature is expected to range from 25 degrees F to 37 degrees F, with each day having a precipitation chance of 10% to 40%, except for December 12, 2010 which is expected to have the highest chance of precipitation - around 90%. The days would be normally cloudy and foggy especially in the morning with rain and snow more likely to occur in the afternoon and in the evening.

Even if there are shifts of Spokane Washington's whether throughout the year, it is always good to be ready always. Therefore, it is best to be prepared everyday!

Fishing Gear - Weather Instruments For Fishing

Fishing Gear - Weather Instruments For Fishing

Conditions on the water can change in the time it takes you to bait your hook. One minute the seas are calm, the next a 40 mph wind is blowing buckets of rain into your face. Fish are affected by the surface weather, too. Many feed off insects that land on the water. Changes in temperature, rainfall and other weather factors influence their behavior.

The best way to stay safe and optimize your odds for a good catch is to carry good weather gear with you. That's as true standing on the shore as it is cruising on a boat. You need to know when to take shelter and it helps to know why the fish aren't biting.

Good weather instruments will provide a big assist in solving those problems.

There are a variety of tools the smart fisherman can take advantage of, including an anemometer. These hand-held units measure current wind speed and direction, maximum wind gusts and calculate an average for you. All those pieces of information are useful and it helps to have a unit that can store the values so you can cycle through them.

A barometric gauge measures air pressure. At home, that's usually no more than an interesting factoid. TV weathermen rarely even bother to report it anymore. But on the water that little piece of information can be a lifesaver. As pressure drops worsening weather is often not far behind. Air pressure is closely associated with changes in temperature, the chances of rain in the near future and other vital facts. Having a way to measure the current air pressure and the trend can be very useful for safe fishing.

The temperature, of course, interests everybody. It affects how we dress, where we'll steer the boat and the odds of that big trout you've been chasing coming out to play or not. It also affects the odds of rain in the offing and other weather phenomenon. An accurate gauge that tells both the cabin and outdoor temperatures is even more useful on the water than at home.

Weather instruments today often integrate all these features. There are units that will provide digital readouts for indoor and outdoor temperature, display air speed, direction, and pressure and even measure the amount of rainfall received over a period of time. They can include sunrise and sunset times, phases of the moon and storm alerts, too.

Shortwave Radio Antennas

Shortwave Radio Antennas

Shortwave radio antennas are a necessity for the shortwave radio operator as they are what sends and brings in the signal across the airwaves into the radio. The benefits of the radio antennas are that they enable a greater and stronger signal to and from the radio. Antennas are made up of a single long wire that is clipped to the radio with a supporting stand or installed on a tower outside the building. For the towers and shortwave radio antennas installed outside, it is important to make sure that there is limited interference from trees, power lines and buildings. Local zoning regulations may also need to be checked on and followed.

Without a radio antenna attached to your shortwave, the radio can only receive a limited number of broadcasts from a shorter distance away. Many shortwave radios are used to exchange emergency information when the larger commercial radio stations are unable to be operated, for example in case of a national emergency or disaster. The different types of communication that short wave radio aerial antennas can receive includes locally broadcast emergency fire and police dispatch and responders; broadcasts from amateur broadcasters in the country and other countries; cultural programs from individual countries and transmissions from ships to shore and airplanes to aviation towers.

One of the best reasons to upgrade your short wave radio aerial antenna is that it will allow you more time to see what is out there and what is being broadcast by other shortwave operators. If you have your short wave radio in a good place, you can hook up the antenna into a tall tree so improve reception there are special radio antenna that can be carried by backpack to increase the range in wilderness areas. Some of the types of short wave radio antenna are configured into a loop, with places to attach it to the radio.

The base of the antenna is black, with the loop of wire resting on it or inserted into the side for better a more level and stable surface. There are other short wave radio aerial antennas that are wireless and even operated by solar power. These other antenna will also allow reception of other signals then shortwave signals generated by individuals and operators. The great reception includes long wave and short wave with the other signals that are used by ship to shore operators and air traffic control.

Shortwave radios are used to keep standard time so they are ideal for listening to accurate up to the minute reports on news, weather and any other programs available to the listeners shortwave radio antenna. A portable shortwave antenna is available to take with a handheld short wave radio, the shortwave radio antennas clips over the existing one and brings in clearer reception from operators across the country and globe. If you add headphones then the shortwave radio is able to be heard in otherwise noisy circumstances or places such as car races, sporting events and noisy public transportation.

Is Coast-to-Coast Am Turning into a Liberal Sounding Board Radio Talk Show

Is Coast-to-Coast Am Turning into a Liberal Sounding Board Radio Talk Show

Coast-to-Coast a.m. with George Nori and Art Bell used to have a special collection of guests on the air each night. They had people who talked about extreme weather, alien beings, UFOs, military technologies, secret government projects, alternative energy, space missions, natural phenomena, ghosts and all sorts of bizarre and interesting things. In fact they would talk all through the night and even allow people to call in and ask questions of the guests.

Unfortunately coast-to-coast a.m. with George Nori and Art Bell has turned into a Liberal sounding board and reminds me much of NPR or other liberal talk shows. In fact these days there are 9/11 conspiracy theorists and many people who simply hate the Bush Administration. This is why I will no longer listen to the coast-to-coast a.m. radio show.

I am not sure why they turned to such a Liberal hodgepodge of BS in citing further mass media hysteria. Perhaps the radio show has been ax to grind, although for the life of me I can't figure out what it would possibly be, as the radio station used to be quite successful.

Perhaps it's because they are now radio broadcasting from Los Angeles during some shows and they have a Liberal skewed view of life on Earth. But what do people from Los Angeles know, after all there are 16.5 million people in Southern California living on 460 square miles of concrete and of course they haven't a clue as to what the rest of the world is about. Please consider this opinion in 2006.

Satellite Radio - XM and Sirius Battle For Your $$$

Satellite Radio is the future of broadcasting

Satellite Radio, in short, can be described as commercial-free music, news, sports and talk shows. Many of the biggest players and events are now available from Sirius radio and XM radio like Howard Stern, Fred Schneider (the B52s), NFL, English Soccer, NBA, NASCAR, NHL, Major League Baseball, INDY, and the PGA.

Satellite radio began in 1992, when the 'S' spectrum was allocated by the FCC to four companies. The two main ones, Sirius and XM paid a pretty penny (in fact almost million dollars worth) to buy a license. Satellite-based radio began on May 15th, 2001 when XM Radio completed their satellite system. Sirius followed shortly when they launched in July, 2001. Since then, expanded products and competition has changed the radio landscape.

While automobile manufacturers started installing satellite radio in 2001 and 2002, most new vehicles come equipped with one now. XM has two satellites (called 'Rock' and 'Roll') in parallel orbits to cover the mainland US market, while Sirius has three. Both have recently been awarded licenses for the Canadian market.

So what are the differences between the two providers?

XM has a flat .99 a month fee with no contracts to sign. They have the latest portable equipment. XM offers some of the best varieties of programming available today. They offer 68 commercial-free music channels; 32 channels of News, Sports, Talk & Entertainment; and 21 channels of instant Traffic & Weather in major metro areas. Here's the latest information of channels:

Things to Consider When Organising an Outdoor Exhibition

Things to Consider When Organising an Outdoor Exhibition

There are many benefits of organising an outdoor exhibition particularly when the events involved products and services which are connected the outdoors. Gardening shows, boat shows, horticultural shows and exhibitions which might for example also include off-road vehicles or other mechanical products. Without question there is a demand and need for outdoor exhibitions, whilst at the same time there are extras considerations to consider such as the weather, the type of exhibition stand to use and also entry points to the exhibition area.

An exhibition is one of the best ways to present, demonstrate and publicise one's products and services to the right audience and outdoors, it can also help to create a more relaxed atmosphere, which works to strengthen existing business agreements and establish new relationships. The effectiveness of an outdoor exhibition can greatly be enhanced by organising an outdoor related entertainment programme and to provide covered areas for potential inclement weather. Weather is certainly one of the biggest concerns for outdoor exhibition organised and many exhibitors at such events can tell of situations whereby promotional literature and the stands themselves have sometimes struggled during strong winds and rain.

As an exhibitor it is a good idea to talk to an Exhibition stands specialist to specifically rent or buy a weather proof and outdoor banner stand or exhibition stand. Be sure to make arrangements for all weathers for your staff including for good weather. Bottled water and sun hats for example on a very hot summer's day can be as important as overhead cover on a rainy exhibition day.

The location of the exhibition should also be seriously considered before organising it. The ideal location has all the required facilities such as telephone and electricity points, restaurants, broadband connection, car parking and facilities for the disabled. Indoor venues are certainly easier to organise in terms of entry points to the exhibition and for an outdoor event, this might also need serious consideration if you want to charge entry fees.

Whether an indoor or outdoor exhibition, publicity is also an important factor that organisers need to consider and they should spread word about the exhibition in an effective manner. The best way to do this is to advertise in the newspapers, or better still, launch a website regarding the exhibition, issue press releases about it, write articles about it and send brochures and invitations to the exhibitors and other key people well in advance.

Subscribe to Satellite Radio

Subscribe to Satellite Radio

Now the Satellite technology has introduced the Satellite radio for the entertainment. You have to subscribe the radio for making it available to you. The main benefit of this radio is that you can enjoy the programs without the interruption of commercials. There are no commercials in that because they use the subscribers fund for their broadcast not the money from the commercial. They provide twenty-four hours of entertainment without commercial interruptions.

You subscribe to the this radio and enjoy the uninterrupted entertainment. The subscription amount is not a huge amount; you can just give twelve dollars for enjoying the programs for a month. The geostationary satellites are providing this service; they transmit the digital radio signals. These digital signals can be received at a wider range. This is a reliable choice for you because you can enjoy the uninterrupted service just by spending a few dollars.

There are also portable satellite radios. Carry on with your entertainment wherever you go. They provide a variety of music, weather report, news updates, sports news, chat shows and talk shows. The portable radio work with batteries and they are also provided with an antennae to receive the signals wherever they go. There will not be any static in the programs; they ensure a clear broadcast even if the person is travelling. The area of coverage of this radio is such wide that you can enjoy the same program while travelling within a continent. There is also an option to get the information regarding the song which is played if you are listening to a satellite radio. The programs broadcast on these satellite radios are not censored. If you are living in a busy place then it is very wise to listen to the traffic in your area from the satellite radio before you start from your home.

New GPS Combines Useful Features

New GPS Combines Useful Features

One of the places that gadgets are becoming increasingly popular is in the great outdoors. It used to be that people flocked to the wilderness in an effort to escape man made things and a lot of the luxuries and nuisances associated with more advanced technology. Now though many technological gadgets have become so light weight and useful that many hikers, boaters, mountain bikers, backpackers, skiers, snow shoers, and mountaineers see no reason not to bring a lot of compact luxuries along into the back country.

Some types of technologies lend themselves especially well to being used in the woods because of their light weight and their ability to function without the support of other types of technologies. For example, many people do not go into the wilderness without a mobile phone for safety reasons. In this case, the fact that mobile phones are so light weight that they make sense to carry even though they don't necessarily work in places where tall, steep mountains would get in the way of finding a tower signal. Fortunately most people don't go very deep into the wilderness, so a mobile phone still makes sense to carry.

For people whose adventures take them farther afield, satellite technology offers a good way to stay connected. For instance, if one wants to have a way of contacting the outside world in case of emergency, a satellite phone is a much better choice than a mobile phone because a satellite phone will still work in places where there are too many miles or mountains in the way of getting a tower signal.

Perhaps even more popular than satellite phones is GPS technology. GPS, which stands for Global Positioning System allows users to determine where they are, often within a dozen feet or so, instantly without having to use a compass and make complicated calculations. This system is based on signals that come from satellites in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, so the signals are available just about anywhere.

Now there are GPS devices that combine navigation features with other information available from satellite signals. A great new example of a device that bundles satellite technology features together is the Bushnell Weather Tracker ONIX 400. This device not only has the navigation capabilities of a typical GPS (the ability to determine position, speed, number of miles traveled, etc.), but it also comes with access to XM satellite radio channels and satellite based weather information. This unit is so advanced that it will even layer weather data over the map that's displayed on the screen of the device so that you can see where a new weather system is coming from. In many ways, the advanced warning that the Weather Tracker ONIX 400 can provide for outdoors people is a much better safety device than any mobile phone because it allows them to avoid trouble to begin with- which is preferable to having to contact someone for rescue after getting into trouble.

For times when an excursion doesn't involve emergencies, the XM satellite radio feature will provide an ever varying soundtrack for adventure. This GPS/satellite radio/weather forecasting device is a good example of how different features can be combined into a truly superior and useful gadget.

The Very First Television Shows

The Very First Television Shows

The first television sets were part electrical and part mechanical, consisting of spinning discs that replicated the action of a larger spinning disc in the studio. The first moving images - of a ventriloquist's dummy - were transmitted by Scot John Logie Baird in 1925.

In 1927 the first tv show was aired. It was a demonstration by Bell Telephone
Labs and AT&T with contributions from various executives of these companies
and a speech by the secretary of commerce, Herbert Hoover.

This was followed by many ad-hoc broadcasts from Whippany, N. J. These were
experiments and were picked up by just one tv set - at Bell Laboratories, New
York City. These broadcasts consisted of images transmitted using radio waves
and sound transmitted via cable. They were not entertainment shows - just
a few engineers and scientists testing out the new medium.

The first shows that aired to the public were those of WRGB (known officially
as W2XB but popularly known as WGY's Television). Broadcasts were
beamed locally to Schenectady, N.Y. This happened to be the home town of
television (and radio) pioneer Ernst Alexanderson. Schenectady was also the home
of just four television receivers. The early WRGB broadcasts usually consisted of a
person sitting in a chair not doing very much except the odd hand or face
movement or a drag on a cigarette. In fact, watching people smoke cigarettes
seems to have been the main feature of early tv test transmissions!

The first scheduled tv shows, and from what I can make out, the world's first
regular tv shows were farming and weather bulletins aired twice a day, 3 days
per week on WRGB. These broadcasts were simply extensions of the output of radio
station WGY. The first remote location broadcast, or outside broadcast, took
place in 1928, once again by WRGB. The subject of this broadcast was Governor Al Smith's
acceptance speech of the Democratic nomination for office President of the United States.
Due to inclement weather, the ceremony was switched from outside to an indoor
location and the short notice didn't allow enough time to test the lighting and
equipment. Hence the resulting live pictures were of poor quality. Meanwhile, in
Wheaton, Maryland, Charles Jenkins' W3XK transmitter started tests followed by
regular programs in July 1928.

These broadcasts were never really meant or designed for wide public consumption,
however, some enthusiasts managed to build crude receivers and got to enjoy the
output. Charles Jenkins' estimated that W3XK had an audience of 20,000.

Many incorrectly quote the BBC's The Man with the Flower in his Mouth from
1930 as being the first broadcast play, but it was actually The Queen's Messenger,
written by J. Harley Manners and directed by Mortimer Stewart. This was aired on
WRGB in 1928.

It must be noted that in those early days television screens were about 3
inches by 3 inches. So small, in fact, that most output consisted of a person's
upper body. "Radio with pictures" is what it was called, and that was
not far off! The images consisted of varying shades of pink or brown, depending
on the illumination used. The presenters and performers would often need to wear
dark lipstick and green makeup so that their features would not be bleached in
the extremely bright studio lights. True color television came later. The
spinning discs were eventually replaced by all-electric systems. All tv shows,
including dramas, were live to air - there was no videotape or digital recording
in those days!

These pioneering broadcasts were effectively experiments (and were licensed
as such by the federal government). Most viewers were either wealthy and curious
or were hobbyists. It is unlikely that television had any real worth as an
entertainment or information medium in these early days. The extent to which
television could expand and could be networked was severely hampered by a lack
of a national standard for telecasting. There were also many technical
difficulties not least with the revolving disc system. It wasn't until the
forties when these issues had been ironed out that tv took off in earnest.

The rest, as they say, is history, but a very rich history indeed. Have a look
at bygonetv.com and you see what I mean.

Weather Radio - The Very First Television Shows

Weather Balloon

Weather Balloon

A Weather Balloon is a high altitude balloon, which carries measuring instruments aloft to send back the information on atmospheric pressure temperature & humidity by means of small expandable measuring device called as RADISONDE.

Whenever any weather balloon is launched its always necessary to continuously monitor these conditions

WEATHER BALLOON:

Weather Balloon is made up of highly flexible latex material though chloroprene may be used chloroprene is used because as it includes UV inhibitors which retards the sun ability to weaken the balloon however it is considered to be more durable rather than latex as it is less destructible.

Weather balloons is filled with gases like hydrogen and helium but now days helium gas is more used rather than using hydrogen gas because helium gas is less hazardous though bit expensive and when balloons which are used to measure atmospheric conditions when normally released they are filled to only 10% to 20% of its original volume of balloon because due to low atmospheric pressure helium gas expands and and exerts force on the wall of balloon and as it moves in upward direction due to low atmospheric pressure helium expands and will occupy the whole volume of the balloon and it will burst after reaching upto 70000 ft of height.

RADIOSONDE:

Radiosonde is the unit, which is hanged at the lower end of the string & performs the measurement and radio transmission.

Sometimes specialized radiosondes are used for measuring particular parameters such as determining the OZONE CONCENTRATION.

Weather Balloon is used in measurement & evaluation of most upper atmospheric conditions. Information may be gathered during the vertical ascent of the balloon during his motion we can also gather information like wind movement and its speed.

HOW IT WORKS:

Initially these balloons are filled with gases like hydrogen or helium and then at the lower end of string RADIOSONDE is attached then the balloon is released. Radiosonde can be tracked by radar so we can measure wind speed & direction as it ascends through the atmosphere.

By the time it reaches the higher altitude the balloon expands as atmospheric pressure decreases and it bursts

Then radiosonde package drifts gently down the ground, which is at the end of the parachute. When data is received from radiosondes it arrives in the series of numbers. Scientists use computers to display the data in form of pictures, which is called Skew T Diagram.

This is how scientist measures our important features like pressure, temperature, wind speed & direction.

Army Sleeping Bag - Tips For Sleeping in Cold Weather

Army Sleeping Bag - Tips For Sleeping in Cold Weather

An army sleeping bag is sometimes used by sportsmen and hunters who are out in severe weather, in addition to regular army troops. These are very rugged, durable sleeping bags that have been designed to function in very cold weather. The first army sleeping bags were issued to mountain soldiers in the early 1940s. They needed to be light weight because the soldiers had to carry them with them. They also needed to be suitable for very cold conditions and the soldier had to have the ability to exit the sleeping bag quickly in case there was an emergency.

Although there have been improvements over the years, the same qualities that were needed in the 1940s are stilled needed today, which also make them a good choice for anyone who is looking for a durable sleeping bag that can perform in severe cold weather.

The current army issue is the Modular Sleeping Bag system which consists of two mummy shaped sleeping bags, the Intermediate Cold Weather and Patrol, a stuff sack and bivy cover. By combining the Intermediate and Patrol sleeping bags it can provide insulation for up to minus 30 degrees F. The Intermediate Cold Weather bag is placed inside the Patrol bag to provide more insulation. The bags are made of ripstop nylon and are water resistant. The sleeping bags also come with a double-pull reversible slider, allowing for bottom or top ventilation, and a draft flap which helps to prevent heat loss.

For the best results in cold weather, the sleeping bags can be placed on top of a sleeping mat made of polyfoam or tree boughs layered beneath the sleeping bag. This helps to prevent heat loss. The army sleeping bag is made to military specifications and is a very durable bag that hunters and sportsmen will be very happy in severe weather conditions.

VHF Marine Radio

VHF Marine Radio

A VHF marine radio is an essential piece of equipment on a vessel. Very High Frequency (VHF) radios are available as a fixed mounted or a handheld portable unit to offer the best method of communicating at sea. Being in a position to contact other boaters is one sure way to enhance safety on large bodies of water.

The usable range of a VHF transceiver is subject to various elements, such as weather, height of the antenna, and model of radio. An effective range of five to twenty miles is often witnessed.

A typical marine radio is built to a high standard, incredibly easy to operate, and able to withstand the often rough conditions at sea, such as moisture, dust, vibration and shock. Hand-held units are ideal as a back up for a stationary or fixed unit and able to cope with direct immersion. VHF sets are often cost effective communication devices, and at minimum, a vessel should have a hand held unit.

A VHF radio offers communication that is more effective and consistent reception in a marine environment than that of a mobile phone or CB radio. Boat radios have dedicated channels reserved for distress calls, and monitored by rescue services, such as the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Channel 16 is the distress channel. And a lot of receivers are able to pick up the latest weather reports, so its possible to keep up to date on conditions when boating.

These two-way communication devices are an essential component of safe boating at sea. No vessel should leave port without a VHF marine radio system onboard.
